It is the most natural human sense of touch that draws me to work with textiles. My rich appreciation of historic and contemporary textiles stems from my professional background in textile conservation and microscope analysis at The Art Institute of Chicago, along with my studies in Italy. Creating high-quality objects, with an emphasis to explore new and old media, is an important element of my art.</p> <p>Whether my artwork elicits a narrative or an abstract image, I feel an inner personal message has been captured. My images may relate to people close to me such as my sister, who was a Peace Corp volunteer in Romania. Her experience reminds me of my own travels in Italy, alone amongst a beautiful landscape edged in golden sunlight so far removed from my regular existence.</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-artist-name field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Jeanette Durand</div> <div class="field field--name-field-artist-languages field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">English</div> <div class="field field--name-field-artist-country field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">United States of America</div> <div class="field field--name-field-artist-nationality field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">English, Italian</div> <div class="field field--name-field-artist-statement field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field--item"><p>I incorporated a hand-embroidered tea towel from the 1950s into the piece. The simple imagery on the towel, as well as its nature as a traditional, handmade object, conjures shelter, companionship, inclusion and home. These are things that everyone deserves and that are part of the promise of Article 22. The one word stitched into the towel, ‘welcome’, also pretty much sums up the attitude that we need for all human rights.</p> <p>I see a lot of homelessness on the streets of Oakland and San Francisco. Often you can see the dignity and promise in people who are down on their luck. Other times you can see that some people just truly need some help to make it in this world. But no one should have to live like that, and it is all of our responsibility to do what we can to make sure every human being can live like one.</p></div> <div class="blazy field field--name-field-quilt-block-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field--item" data-blazy=""> <div class="media media--blazy media--loading media--image"> <img use_blurry_placeholder="1" height="2295" width="3300" class="b-lazy media__image media__element img-responsive" data-src="https://quilts.moadoph.gov.au/sites/default/files/styles/quilt_block_large/public/2018-10/22_2.jpg?itok=-S7G6V3C" alt="Article 22 by Jeanette Durand" src="data:image/jpeg;base64,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" typeof="foaf:Image" /> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-artist-photo field--type-image field--label-hidden field--item"> <img src="/sites/default/files/styles/portrait/public/2018-10/Jeanette%20Durand.jpg?itok=IUszPJm_" width="500" height="600" alt="Jeanette Durand" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" /> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-udhr-article field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">UDHR Article</div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/26" hreflang="en">Article 22</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-quilt field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Quilt</div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/red-quilt" hreflang="en">Red quilt</a></div> </div> Mon, 15 Oct 2018 03:16:14 +0000 website@moadoph.gov.au 33 at https://quilts.moadoph.gov.au Loretta Avery https://quilts.moadoph.gov.au/quilt-block/loretta-avery <span>Loretta Avery</span> <span><span lang="" about="/user/1" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" content="website@moadoph.gov.au">website@moadop…</span></span> <span>Mon, 10/15/2018 - 16:14</span> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item"><p>Loretta Avery is a 19-year-old student from Vancouver, Canada. Being so close to the United States can be distracting, but she doesn’t want people to forget about Canada’s past and present with LGBTIQ+ and Indigenous rights. Although my design is simple, it is meaningful. I included the colours of the Pride flag because I am bisexual. When I first designed my piece, I had not yet come out, but in the many months since first creating this piece, I found something within me to show my true colours. Creating this piece and showing it to my peers was important in the process of me finding comfort within my sexuality and being myself. </p> <p>I live in Vancouver, Canada, a beautifully diverse city. To not include the updated version of the Pride flag felt wrong, and ignorant of history. LGBTQI+ People of Colour have been some of the strongest leaders in the Pride community and fought for our rights harder than almost anyone else. Without these courageous activists, I wouldn’t have had the privilege to safely come out (or even come out at all). This project has helped me come out of my shell (and the closet) and I hope it inspires others to do the same.</p></div> <div class="blazy field field--name-field-quilt-block-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field--item" data-blazy=""> <div class="media media--blazy media--loading media--image"> <img use_blurry_placeholder="1" height="2322" width="3300" class="b-lazy media__image media__element img-responsive" data-src="https://quilts.moadoph.gov.au/sites/default/files/styles/quilt_block_large/public/2018-10/22_1.jpg?itok=PG1GANTy" alt="Article 22 by Loretta Avery" src="data:image/jpeg;base64,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" typeof="foaf:Image" /> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-artist-photo field--type-image field--label-hidden field--item"> <img src="/sites/default/files/styles/portrait/public/2018-10/Loretta%20Avery.jpg?itok=GDW6e06J" width="500" height="600" alt="Loretta Avery" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" /> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-udhr-article field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">UDHR Article</div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/26" hreflang="en">Article 22</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-quilt field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Quilt</div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/green-quilt" hreflang="en">Green quilt</a></div> </div> Mon, 15 Oct 2018 05:14:05 +0000 website@moadoph.gov.au 63 at https://quilts.moadoph.gov.au Noca Passos (Maria Fulô) https://quilts.moadoph.gov.au/quilt-block/noca-passos-maria-fulo <span>Noca Passos (Maria Fulô)</span> <span><span lang="" about="/user/1" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" content="website@moadoph.gov.au">website@moadop…</span></span> <span>Mon, 10/15/2018 - 16:37</span> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item"><p>Noca Passos is Brazilian, living in Argentina for 12 years now, mom of three. She also loves making dolls, sewing and patchwork, and experimenting with different combinations of techniques.</p> <p>Today embroidery means a lot for her routine too, as she works as an embroidery teacher, on her studio called Maria Fulô, located in Buenos Aires. We are all humans.</p> <p>I believe we can do a lot locally, but sometimes working online gives us the opportunity to create activism situations to make people more conscious about some topics.</p> <p>Article 22 was not my first selection. But this made it challenging, as I had to think on how to express this right.
