I am currently a sophomore at Arizona State University studying environmental design. I’ve lived in Arizona my whole life but I have been lucky enough to travel around a bunch, thanks to having two flight attendants as parents. I started embroidering this past month and quickly fell in love with it. Outside of embroidery I enjoy many other forms of art: drawing, painting, throwing pottery, collage/mixed media, etc. I love being able to explore all forms of art and allow my knowledge from separate mediums to influence me in my endeavours. I hope to continue to embroider and further develop my embroidery skills—maybe so much as to begin selling some of my work.

I made this quilt block while I was a sophomore at Arizona State University, studying environmental design. I’d only done embroidery for a month and quickly fell in love with it.

I am honoured to take part in this project. I’ve lived in Arizona my whole life but I have been lucky enough to travel around a bunch, thanks to having two flight attendants as parents. I think it is awesome that something like this could bring together so many voices from all over the world that all agree on this one universal statement of human rights.

In regards to my take on Article 19, I decided to not take a specific political stance on any particular issue. I left it as simply a statement declaring this right for all.

Maryanne Wollner is a curious, big-hearted, animal-loving Queer Person of Colour who has a huge love of fibre arts and textiles. She has never found a medium that has held her attention as much as embroidery. She graduated from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2012, enjoying photography, printmaking, sculpture, book-making, and creative writing. During the last term of school she began to develop an interest in needle-felting and wet-felting, later moving on to sewing and embroidery.

Maryanne has worked for Public Dreams Society, a community-based arts group, and has donated art to Art For Life, a local organisation that helps people with AIDS access various supports.

After earning a diploma in early childhood education at Langara College in 2014, she has worked with children in group-care settings for the past few years. Helping facilitate opportunities for children to be creative is ever fascinating and greatly rewarding. She is also interested in finding ways to help adults remember how fearless they were as children, creatively, and help them be free to engage in the process and explore new mediums.

Maryanne revels in any opportunity to be in nature and around animals. Based in Vancouver, Canada, she lives with her two cats on the unceded territory of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh people.

Much of my work centres around the right for people to have dignity and respect, especially those who face multiple points of marginalisation: women, children, Queer people, poor people and people of colour. This project let me focus on these rights, and create something personally meaningful.

It was important to me that the backdrop be a night sky, because it highlights the feeling that sometimes envelops us staring up at night: a knowing that though we are finite and small, we are also part of a vast, wondrous universe that wouldn’t be the same without us.

The world needs this quilt more than ever. In the United States, human rights are being threatened or stripped away. If you are free to express yourself in the place and life you live in, do it! Don’t take it for granted, and help others shine brighter whenever and wherever you can. Small things add up, stitch by stitch …

Camila Ussa / Veneno was born in Colombia and is currently working from Brooklyn, New York. She is a multidisciplinary street artist who is fascinated by handicrafts and how DIY is changing the world we live in. Veneno started as 100% handmade embroidered designs, as patches and clothes, but rapidly started to change as the artist decided to work with different materials and mixed media (stencil, collage, painting, stickers, zines, video…). The work is usually dropped around the streets of Brooklyn or Manhattan and shared via social media.

She is the creator of the free zine PINCHE, where she brings together artists worldwide through call outs. This zine is fully created and distributed by Veneno. Lately, she is working on body collage, using her body as canvas and also with collaborators. The idea is to make people talk; make them feel through art. Veneno is always showing freely her personal point of view, inviting equality, and using different media and ideas to share with the world her own way of expression.

I found out about the project via Instagram, and I loved the idea right away. I chose Article 19 ’cause it goes perfectly with the idea of freedom I’m living in this time of my life, as an independent woman, as an empirical artist, as a human being in a society.

I wanted to keep it simple from the type to the tones; the canvas I used was a recycled pink fabric; all of it was 100% handmade. It was really important for me to share the message in both languages I speak, English and Spanish. The result of my canvas is pretty feminine, and reflects the love with which it was made. It’s an invitation to express yourself freely.

Cathy Speed is a craftivist and designer from Melbourne, Australia. Her work primarily involves themes relating to feminism and women’s rights, with a focus upon text-based works. The use of text stems from her training as a graphic designer, bringing the medium off the screen to give it a tactile power.

She has exhibited in group shows in Melbourne and participated in various human rights art displays, always in the medium of thread and fabric.

When not sewing, Cathy can be found doing one of three things—watching sci-fi TV shows, at a Les Mills gym class or listening to mid-2000s pop punk.

I was drawn to this Article as each person’s individual thoughts and opinions are what give them their individuality in the world. Being able to express your authentic self is important to living a good life.

Since I work within the media and communications field, I can see how easily a party/person could take control of communication forms, and what effect it would have. There are many places where people are one political turn or one media takeover from a higher level of censorship.

Initially I was going to put iconography around the Article text, but leaving it blank is a more fitting approach as it encourages people to think about what opinions and methods of communication they hold dear. Hopefully this then leads to people thinking about what would happen if that was cut off from them, and becoming slightly more aware of how precious and fragile this right is—even in a country like Australia.
