Using embroidery as a tool for meditation, her process involves using intricate stitching techniques to work through complex subject matter.</p> <p>After graduating from university, she went to work for Fine Cell Work, a social enterprise that trains prisoners in paid, skilled needlework. Here, she learned first-hand the positive impact embroidery can have on individual lives and its ability to build self-worth and overcome troubling feelings.</p> <p>Now an advocate of the slow movement, embroidery gives the necessary space and time to contemplate and understand the challenging issues we face every day. It allows for physical expression of emotions through a very focused and detail-oriented process that is extremely meditative and cathartic.</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-artist-name field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Katheryn Benedict-Perri</div> <div class="field field--name-field-artist-languages field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">English</div> <div class="field field--name-field-artist-country field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Canada</div> <div class="field field--name-field-artist-nationality field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">English, Italian</div> <div class="field field--name-field-artist-statement field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field--item"><p>Today people are able to share more information more publicly than ever before without always understanding the full extent of its reach. Born and raised in south-west Sydney, Alyce was inspired to cross-stitch, embroider, and sew by her mother, who is an experienced and talented crafter in a range of different media. In recent years, Alyce has married this interest in craft with her scholarly interest in matters of criminal justice. She has researched widely in the area of crime and media, and is currently researching yarn-bombing and craftivism from a criminological perspective.</p> <p>Elaine Fishwick was born in Manchester, England, and migrated to Australia in 1988. The north of England has a proud tradition of radical politics and of craft: it is where the weaving and spinning industries developed and where the Pankhursts began the suffragette movement. The history of art and craft to express views and to make a stand have always been strong in the north. </p> <p>With such history flowing into the water and onto the land, Elaine has been involved in rights and justice campaigning from her teens. Her mum taught her to knit when she was little and she has always dabbled in knitting and needlework of some sort. As her kids have grown older, she is able to spend more time doing crafty things as well as gardening, which she loves. She has just finished a cross-stitch style miniature based on the landscape of the Peak District, having been inspired by being back in the north of England for a few months and from seeing the work of her sister who is a really creative sewer—making wild pieces of embroidered art. There’s a needlepoint felt project in the making too, using local sheep’s wool from different breeds. </p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-artists field--type-entity-reference-revisions field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Artists</div> <div class="carousel slide" data-interval="" data-ride="carousel" id="carousel-component-1"> <!-- Indicators --> <ol class="carousel-indicators"> <li data-slide-to="1" data-target="#carousel-component-1"> </li> <li data-slide-to="2" data-target="#carousel-component-2"> </li> </ol> <!-- Wrapper for slides --> <div class="carousel-inner" role="listbox"> <div class="item"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--artist paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div class="field field--name-field-name field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Name</div> <div class="field--item">Alyce McGovern</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-language field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Language</div> <div class="field--item">English, Emoji</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-country field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Country</div> <div class="field--item">Australia</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-nationality field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Nationality</div> <div class="field--item">Australian</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-photo field--type-image field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Photo</div> <div class="field--item"> <img src="/sites/default/files/2018-10/Alyce%20McGovern.jpg" width="500" height="600" alt="Alyce McGovern" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" /> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="item"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--artist paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div class="field field--name-field-name field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Name</div> <div class="field--item">Elaine Fishwick</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-language field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Language</div> <div class="field--item">English, Emoji</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-country field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Country</div> <div class="field--item">Australia</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-nationality field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Nationality</div> <div class="field--item">English</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-photo field--type-image field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Photo</div> <div class="field--item"> <img src="/sites/default/files/2018-10/Elaine%20Fishwick.jpg" width="500" height="600" alt="Elaine Fishwick" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" /> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <!-- Controls --> <a class="left carousel-control" data-slide="prev" href="#carousel-component-1" role="button"><span class="sr-only">Previous</span> </a> <a class="right carousel-control" data-slide="next" href="#carousel-component-2" role="button"> <span class="sr-only">Next</span> </a> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-quilt field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--item"><a href="/green-quilt" hreflang="en">Green quilt</a></div> <div class="field field--name-field-udhr-article field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">UDHR Article</div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/16" hreflang="en">Article 12</a></div> </div> <div class="blazy field field--name-field-quilt-block-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field--item" data-blazy=""> <div data-thumb="https://quilts.moadoph.gov.au/sites/default/files/styles/quilt_block/public/2018-10/12_2.jpg?itok=NdAkYlNH" class="media media--blazy media--loading media--image"> <img use_blurry_placeholder="1" height="2273" width="3300" class="b-lazy media__image media__element img-responsive" data-src="https://quilts.moadoph.gov.au/sites/default/files/styles/quilt_block_large/public/2018-10/12_2.jpg?itok=Pnl2MV2U" alt="Article 12 by Alyce McGovern &amp; She uses her extensive knowledge of embroidery and textile techniques to create contemporary wall art. Her attention to pattern, colour and texture allows customers to take a small piece of Ireland into their homes.<br />  <br /> Alice is currently working on a series inspired by Irish wildflowers. As our towns and cities develop, traditional hedgerows are beginning to disappear. Through this series, Alice wishes to remind the audience of the importance we once placed on these wildflowers. Although they are not used as medicines or talismans today, they are still an important part of our landscape and culture. <br />  <br /> Alongside this, Alice is also creating custom embroideries for every occasion. Whether it be to celebrate the birth of a child, a wedding gift, or just because, no idea is too small. Alice also creates jewellery pieces, prints and hoops to be sold at markets around Dublin. <br />  <br /> Alice graduated from the Royal School of Needlework in 2017 with a Bachelor of Arts in hand-embroidery. She has worked on a number of high-profile projects, such as Nicholas Oakwell’s GREAT dress for the GREAT Britain Campaign, and the HBO Game of Thrones Hardhome Embroidery. During her time at the Royal School of Needlework, Alice was awarded bursaries in 2016 and 2017. In 2018, her work was displayed in <em>Artonomy</em> at the MART Gallery, Dublin—an exhibition and auction held to raise money for the campaign to repeal the 8th Amendment in Ireland. Alice also donated work to the Take Heart Pop Up to support the work of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre.</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-artist-name field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Be Alice</div> <div class="field field--name-field-artist-languages field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Gaeilge</div> <div class="field field--name-field-artist-country field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Ireland</div> <div class="field field--name-field-artist-nationality field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Irish</div> <div class="field field--name-field-artist-statement field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field--item"><p>This project comes at a time of great turmoil in the world. This project is a statement, the opening of a dialogue that I wish to be a part of.</p> <p>In my block, I wanted to represent Ireland. Though we have a rich ancient history and culture, we are a young country. We have been working hard in recent years to change injustices. The referendums on marriage equality and bodily autonomy have shown that activism does work, and there is a whole new generation of Irish growing up seeing that their voices and their votes really can change the world around them.
