Rather than using imagery specific to one of these stories, I wanted to create a striking image that people would remember and that would encapsulate the theme of this Article. I chose an anonymous fist wrapped around bars. However, I also wanted to instil the notion of hope within the image. I chose floral fabric to symbolise this, inspired by the saying; ‘They tried to bury us; they didn’t know we were seeds’. </p></div> <div class="blazy field field--name-field-quilt-block-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field--item" data-blazy=""> <div class="media media--blazy media--loading media--image"> <img use_blurry_placeholder="1" height="2245" width="3300" class="b-lazy media__image media__element img-responsive" data-src="https://quilts.moadoph.gov.au/sites/default/files/styles/quilt_block_large/public/2018-10/9_3.jpg?itok=UaNyZJnL" alt="Article 9 by Rachel Louise Edler" src="data:image/jpeg;base64,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" typeof="foaf:Image" /> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-artist-photo field--type-image field--label-hidden field--item"> <img src="/sites/default/files/styles/portrait/public/2018-10/Rachel%20Edler.jpg?itok=jlGyHqnp" width="500" height="600" alt="Rachel Louise Edler" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" /> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-udhr-article field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">UDHR Article</div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/13" hreflang="en">Article 9</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-quilt field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Quilt</div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/red-quilt" hreflang="en">Red quilt</a></div> </div> Mon, 15 Oct 2018 02:42:45 +0000 website@moadoph.gov.au 20 at https://quilts.moadoph.gov.au Lerato Motau https://quilts.moadoph.gov.au/quilt-block/lerato-motau <span>Lerato Motau</span> <span><span lang="" about="/user/1" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" content="website@moadoph.gov.au">website@moadop…</span></span> <span>Mon, 10/15/2018 - 15:31</span> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item"><p>I love the brightness of luminous tones; I refer to them as ‘mashangane colours’. While I was stitching, lawyers and protesters were on their way to John F Kennedy International Airport to fight President Trump’s ‘Muslim ban’. The ban unjustly prevented people from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States. Then, the Trump administration announced that immigrant children at the southern border were to be detained at facilities separate from their parents. The United States also has a history of systematic racism that targets people of colour through mass incarceration. </p> <p>I stitched on a napkin that belonged to my mother. I used it so she could be part of the project, and because it resembles the colour of my skin. I stitched a gradient of different flesh tones with a technique that mimics the look of hair. By using different flesh tones, I hope to convey a sense of unity among all people. Equality is a human right. </p></div> <div class="blazy field field--name-field-quilt-block-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field--item" data-blazy=""> <div class="media media--blazy media--loading media--image"> <img use_blurry_placeholder="1" height="2288" width="3300" class="b-lazy media__image media__element img-responsive" data-src="https://quilts.moadoph.gov.au/sites/default/files/styles/quilt_block_large/public/2018-10/9_2.jpg?itok=OXPcOgk0" alt="Article 9 by Ashley Catharine Smith" src="data:image/jpeg;base64,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" typeof="foaf:Image" /> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-artist-photo field--type-image field--label-hidden field--item"> <img src="/sites/default/files/styles/portrait/public/2018-10/Ashley%20Catharine%20Smith.jpg?itok=fgc81KHt" width="500" height="600" alt="Ashley Catharine Smith" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" /> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-udhr-article field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">UDHR Article</div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/13" hreflang="en">Article 9</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-quilt field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Quilt</div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/blue-quilt" hreflang="en">Blue quilt</a></div> </div> Mon, 15 Oct 2018 05:25:28 +0000 website@moadoph.gov.au 80 at https://quilts.moadoph.gov.au Cat Evans https://quilts.moadoph.gov.au/quilt-block/cat-evans <span>Cat Evans</span> <span><span lang="" about="/user/1" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" content="website@moadoph.gov.au">website@moadop…</span></span> <span>Mon, 10/15/2018 - 16:47</span> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item"><p>Cat Evans grew up in Canberra and has recently returned there from living in Melbourne to study art.
